DRESS CODE IN IRAN FOR TOURISTS

For Women

Iran observes the Islamic dress code, which calls for women to cover their hair, neck and arms. This doesn’t mean you need to cover up your entire body with a chador (a black cloth that covers the whole body), you simply need to cover your head and hair with a hijab or loose scarf.

We would advise female travellers to wear long, flowing tops or tunics and cardigans that run below the waistline. Baggy pants and covered shoes are also highly recommended. Many Iranian women also wear a manteau, or trench coat with long sleeves, that usually falls below the knee. It’s a false belief that women face limitation in the colour of their clothing; there are absolutely no restrictions in colour when it comes to the dress code

What About Legs & Body?

According to the dress code in Iran for tourists, you are supposed to hide your body shape, so you should wear trousers – either jeans, or if visiting in summer, something loose and cotton is best. Your top should be fairly baggy and fall to about mid thigh. A summer dress over jeans and t shirt is a good option. Bare forearms are fine but you should definitely cover your shoulders.

For Men

There are fewer rules for men, but you should avoid shorts – wear jeans or trousers. T shirts are fine, but you should avoid sleeveless vests and stick to t shirts or shirts. Iranian men dress smartly, more often than not in shirts.
