Isfahan
Isfahan or Esfahan, is a major city in Iran and the capital of Isfahan Province.
Isfahan flourished from 1050 to 1722, particularly in the 16th and 17th centuries under the Safavid dynasty when it became the capital of Persia for the second time in its history under Shah Abbas the Great. Even today the city retains much of its past glory.
It is famous for its Perso–Islamic architecture, striking boulevards, stunning covered bridges, magnificent palaces, beautiful churches and functioning synagogues but its glory is not limited to its countless historical sites. Zayanderud flowing through the heart of the city, like many world capitals, has created a rich cultural hub where one can grasp the true feeling of the Persian way of life. The fame of Isfahan led to the Persian pun and proverb "Esfahān nesf-e- jahān ast": Isfahan is half (of) the world.
The Naqsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan is one of the largest city squares in the world. UNESCO has designated it a World Heritage Site.
Isfahan is Iran’s top tourist destination, and it’s easy to see why. Ancient Islamic architecture, three UNESCO world heritage sites, gorgeous bridges, friendly locals, and plenty of hidden locations to discover. Isfahan should be top of every traveler’s list in Iran.
